I have removed Google Tag Manager from New Car Deals Ireland. This was being used on the site to mainly track site performance and also occasionally for ad campaign performance. The Tag Manager was removed because it was complicating matters from a technical and GDPR perspective and the analytics logged were not accurate. The inaccuracy may have been partially due to many users using ad blockers or choosing necessary cookies only. However, the discrepancy in user numbers was more likely caused by technical issues with the GDPR compliancy on certain browsers.
It was easy to prove that Google Analytics was not logging all hits with some basic testing. Also, the hosting service provides analytics that, although more basic than Google's offering, was logging many more hits than Google. As I have access to this data and Google wasn't delivering accurate information, I decided to remove the Google scripts rather than spend weeks trying to solve a difficult issue with external code.
This decision has the following benefits:
- The site now loads a little quicker. These Google scripts were slowing the page loading times.
- The site is even more pleasant to use as there is no annoying cookie pop-up any more!
- The site is now GDPR compliant as the Google scripts were the only non-essential cookies used.
- The site is easier to maintain. No more Google JavaScript code that has to interact with the cookie pop-up and the button for changing preferences on the Privacy page.
The Privacy page has been much simplified as a result of this change. The site pages now load really quickly and Google PageSpeed indicates they are running at maximum performance, now that the Google scripts are no longer being loaded.
Just another way to make New Car Deals Ireland even better to use!
